Signs that your child may need eyeglasses

Young children generally don’t let their parents know if they are having trouble seeing – a problem that can impact a child’s performance socially and academically. That’s why it’s important for parents to recognize the potential signs and seek a professional evaluation.

At the office of Optical Outlets, our warm and friendly team is skilled in working with children of all ages. Using advanced diagnostic tools, we will perform a comprehensive eye test to determine whether your child has a vision problem that may possible require eyeglasses.

As a general rule, children should have their first comprehensive eye exam at six months of age, again at age 3, and then just before they enter the first grade — at about age 5 or 6. School-aged children should have an eye exam at least every two years if no vision correction is required. Children who need eyeglasses should be examined annually or as recommended by their eye doctor. Should problems arise, seek an evaluation as soon as possible.

Signs your child may need glasses:
• squinting often
• tilting head or covering one eye
• sitting too close to the television or holding hand-held devices too close to the eyes
• rubbing eyes excessively
• complaining of frequent headaches or eye pain
• having difficulty concentrating on schoolwork

Eyeglasses work to improve how well your child sees — strengthening vision in a weak eye or improving the position of the eyes if they are crossed or misaligned.

Prevent Harmful Eye Conditions

Your child’s eye health and vision play an important role in their physical, social and cognitive development. By addressing visual impairments and eye conditions early on, you’re giving your child the opportunity they deserve to thrive socially and academically. At the office of Optical Outlets we’ll perform an age-appropriate exam to evaluate your child’s visual acuity, focusing skills and eye movement, as well as make sure the eyes work comfortably together. Our team helps your child feel at ease throughout their visit, making every exam a stress-free experience.

Visual impairments in children may be difficult to identify without a comprehensive examination from an eye care professional. Along with your child’s first visit to the pediatrician and the dentist, your child’s first eye exam is vital to their overall health. The American Optometric Association recommends children come in for their first eye exam at six months old, then again at 3 years and for a checkup before they begin kindergarten. After that, it’s recommended to bring your child in once every two years, unless their vision requires more frequent monitoring. While one in four children are diagnosed with a vision disorder, many children are not even be aware there is a deficit in their vision or report any difficulties seeing. With a comprehensive eye examination, our office can identify refractive errors such as nearsightedness and farsightedness, as well as strabismus, amblyopia and any other eye or vision irregularities. To treat refractive errors, we will recommend the appropriate corrective lenses. In many cases, early detection and care can prevent harmful eye conditions from progressing and provide the opportunity for optimal vision development and function.

Many common refractive errors, such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism can be diagnosed in childhood with a routine eye care. If your child has a visual impairment, corrective lenses, vision therapy and other treatments can help him or her reach important developmental milestones and thrive socially and academically. For those children who require eyeglasses, our showroom offers an extensive selection of colorful eyewear with fun designs your child will love to wear. We’ll also discuss with you and every member of your family the best ways to protect your eyes from becoming compromised by injury or sun exposure. Because of the impact UV rays have on eyesight, sunglasses are crucial for people of all ages. A good pair of sunglasses helps protect against macular degeneration and cataracts, which are leading causes of vision loss in people over 40. Not only is macular degeneration more common in older adults, but presbyopia, glaucoma and cataracts are also more likely to develop with age. For this reason it’s important to schedule a baseline eye exam to tests for these conditions at the age of 40. Presbyopia, can be corrected with reading glasses, bifocals or progressive lenses. While glaucoma is not curable, it can be managed to prevent against further vision loss if detected early on.

Comprehensive Eye Examinations

At the office of Optical Outlets, we provide comprehensive eye examinations, using state-of-the-art technology and methods. We strive to diagnose conditions that can compromise your vision early in their onset, when they are often easiest to manage and treat. A condition known as glaucoma is sometimes called the “silent thief of sight.” Glaucoma earned this reputation as the earliest stages of this condition typically go unnoticed. For this reason, routinely scheduled, comprehensive eye exams are essential for adults over 40 years of age.

Glaucoma refers to a group of conditions, which cause damage to the optic nerve. The most common form of glaucoma is open-angle glaucoma, and the prevalence of this condition increases with age. Often, open-angle glaucoma does not present with any symptoms or vision loss until the condition has progressed. If you have open-angle glaucoma, you may notice a gradual loss of peripheral vision, making it difficult to see objects on the sides and corners of your visual field. Studies show that the pressure within your eye, known as intraocular pressure, is often elevated in people with open-angle glaucoma. During your examination our optometrist will measure your intraocular pressure, perform a visual acuity test, and thoroughly examine the anatomical structures of your eyes, to diagnose glaucoma as early as possible. At all times, our caring office team keeps you informed and at ease, addressing any questions or concerns you may have throughout your course of care. If glaucoma is diagnosed, it is important to begin treatment without delay. In this way, we can help to manage the condition and to prevent it from progressing and further compromise your vision. Our office keeps pace with leading-edge treatment methods and will create a personalized treatment plan to meet your individual needs.

Sign of Cataracts

Blurred vision could be a sign of cataracts. At the office of Optical Outlets, we can provide a proper diagnosis and make sure you get the care you need!

What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts are films that form in the lens of the eye that can impair your vision. This is a very common condition for both men and women aged 60 and over. If you do have cataracts, rest assured, they can be removed and your vision will be restored.

What Causes Cataracts?
Cataracts form due to a breakdown of the protein in the lens of your eye. This is a normal part of the aging process and usually develops slowly, over time. When the protein breaks down it can result in cloudy vision.

Some other causes of cataracts include:
• Family history of cataracts
• Diabetes
• Certain eye injuries
• Sun damage
• Certain medications such as corticosteroids

It’s always important to wear anti-UV ray sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. This can even help slow the development of cataracts. We can discuss with you the best ways to care for your eyes and provide a referral if you would like to get more information about cataract surgery.

Getting a Cataract Diagnosis
We will perform an eye exam to determine if you do have cataracts. You may have them in one or both eyes. If you do, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist to determine if surgery is right for you. Sometimes glasses alone are all that’s needed to correct the vision issue. However, it can be very helpful to have the cataracts removed if you are having trouble seeing or driving or performing your every day activities. It’s typically not an emergency procedure, so you can take time to consider your surgical options in care.

Developing Glaucoma

The second leading cause of blindness worldwide typically progresses so slowly and silently that you may not be aware of its presence until your vision has been compromised. While there is no known cure for glaucoma, early detection and management can help slow its progression, prevent any further damage and preserve your vision. With routine comprehensive eye exams, the office of Optical Outlets can diagnose glaucoma from its outset and develop an effective treatment plan.

Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve. While there are different types of glaucoma, the most common of which is open angle glaucoma, which occurs gradually when fluid fails to drain from the eye. This buildup of fluid increases pressure within the eye, thereby damaging the optic nerve. Typically vision loss and other symptoms of open angle glaucoma take a long time to develop. However, with other types of glaucoma, such as angle closure glaucoma, the onset of symptoms may be sudden. While the exact cause of glaucoma is unknown, there are several known risk factors. A family history of glaucoma, advanced age, certain medical conditions and certain features of your eye’s anatomy can increase the likelihood of developing glaucoma. To diagnose glaucoma our optometrist will test your intraocular pressure, visually assess your optic nerve and assess optic nerve function. Visual field tests to assess your peripheral vision can help determine if blind spots have developed. If you are at high risk for glaucoma, our team will continue to carefully monitor your vision and provide the guidance and care to help preserve and protect your eyesight.
